Awaji Incense by Astier de Villatte
Box of 125 sticks

Made in the Japanese island of Awaji, using ancestral traditions and techniques, its delicate smoke exhales a delicate scent of driftwood, resins, jasmine and immortelle. Legend has it that, one day, a trunk of Agar wood was washed onto the beach. The island dwellers burned it, and the smell was so intoxicating that they decided to offer it as a gift to the Emperor, and later on erect a sanctuary.

The best incense in the world is found on the island of Awaji, due to its favourable climate. For more than a thousand years it has been made here by the Koh-shis or Masters of Aromas, a tradition passed down from father to son. They alone perfectly master the four stages of production: the dosage of exclusively natural materials, precious woods, herbs, plants, vegetable resins, and perfume; the kneading of the dough, pressed and worked for a long time, then left to stand for two weeks to soak up the fragrance; the cutting of the dough, rolled into long, narrow ribbons, to the desired size; then drying in the west wind for three days before bundling the sticks.

Precautionary measures:

Light the end of the stick with a match, blow out the flame and leave to smoke. Plant the stick in an incense burner or a bowl of sand. Do not use in a flammable environment. Do not leave burning without supervision. Keep out of reach of children and animals.

Burning time 30 minutes each.

Back to Black is a tobacco aroma with sweet undertones of Honey. The freshness of the Bergamot of Calabria contrasted by the heat of spices – Cardamom of Guatemala and Coriander berry of Europe – creates an elegant yet unusual opening. The heart is composed with Honey from Laos, Oliban from Somalia, Cedar from the Atlas and Vetiver from Haïti. A few notes of Oak Moss and Patchouli from Indonesia coat this woody marquetry. This “tobacco” composition is further intensified by powerful Amber notes reinforced with a soft accord of powdery vanilla which provide the power and tenacity to the perfume.

Heir to a long line of cognac makers who were pioneers in luxury, Kilian decided to take up the torch of family tradition. Creating a new luxury brand was definitely a challenge worthy of his predecessors.

His childhood haunts included the family cellars in Cognac. Before graduating from CELSA, he wrote a thesis on the semantics of scent, in search of a ‘language’ common to gods and mortals. Remembering the “angels’ share” as part of his heritage, he was led into the world of perfumery. The “angels’ share” is what the House of Hennessy calls the percentage that – inexplicably – evaporates from cognac cellars, like an offering to the gods.

Many of Kilian’s fragrances today carry this childhood memory as they are reminiscent of the sugar in the alcohol and the wood of the cognac barrels

Blossoms Smoke / 57 embodies the evolution of the family legacy, with Romain Almairac carrying on the tradition of his father, Michel, while adding his own creative and personal touch.

The fragrance opens with smoky, intense, and earthy notes, creating an immediate impact. This smoky signature quickly fades, revealing white flowers that bring a luminous softness, with a burning, dangerous undertone, giving the fragrance a complex, evolving character. Parle Moi de Parfum is all about family. Benjamin Almairac grew up with the stories about perfume that his father brought home from work. He dreamt of creating a venue right in the centre of Paris where the public could discover the finest fragrances that Michel Almairac had always dreamed of creating and staging. It was absolutely obvious! I was steeped in perfume when I was a boy. It was difficult to miss!

Together with Elisabeth, his mother, and Romain, his brother, he designed a space for witnessing the creation of a perfume and discovering that combination of magic and technique, of disconcerting ease and maddening complexity, that Michel describes when talking about his work.

The brand name is a clear declaration of intent: to talk about perfume and nothing else.

Bois d'Ebene is a dark Ambery wood fragrance.

Aurélien Guichard has taken Guaiac Wood oil from Paraguay and strengthened the woody density with Patchouli oil from Indonesia and Cypriol oil from India. The ambery facet is accentuated by the addition of Cabreuva oil from Brazil.

Aurélien Guichard comes from a line of seven generations of perfumers. He perpetuated this family know how by becoming a perfumer at an early age and recently took over a business of rose grower in Grasse.

Each of his Matiere Premiere creations reflects the respect of an oral transmission collected with great attention and tenderness. He consider perfumery as a way of life, where sense of observation, sensitivity to other and generosity are the qualities of the perfumer. His inspiration comes mainly from the exchanges with the people he meets.

Aurélien Guichard is the son of the famed perfumer Jean Guichard who is the director of the Givaudan Perfumery school and an incredibly accomplished master perfumer who grew up in Grasse, where his father grew glowers for the perfume industry. Following in his fathers footsteps he has created some of the most coveted fragrances for the houses of Guerlain, Tom Ford, Narciso Rodriguez, Gucci, Nina Ricci, Comme de Garcons, to name a few.

Deep in an English garden with an Agatha Christie novel. A cluster of sensual, opulent roses from Morocco and fruity ones from Turkey, entwined with green, vegetable notes from violet leaves, galbanum, verbena, spicy effusions of cinnamon leaf.

Contains essences of Verbena, Morocco Rose Absolute, Turkish rose, Ylang-Ylang, Egyptian geranium, Ceylon Cinnamon Leaf, Galbanum and Violet Leaf Accord.

The wax formulation, plant-based with a touch of beeswax, is unique. Free from paraffin or petrochemical derivatives, and therefore free from soot, its exceptionally supple and tender texture is a guarantee of its purity. The wax, worked for a long time, is perfectly miscible with the perfume, releasing the scent both hot and cold. The wick, woven in pure cotton, ensures combustion without traces, lasting and perfect for 60 to 70 hours, depending on the scent. Handcrafted blown glass tumblers from Tuscany have a transparent, slightly grey colour, and light bubbles, giving them a unique, timeless appearance. Labels and packaging are lead-printed on old presses by SAIG, one of the last typographic workshops in the world.

Precautionary measures:

At no time should any burning candle be left unattended. Keep lighted candles out of reach of children and pets. Keep the wick trimmed to 5 or 6 mm, this length should be maintained throughout the burning process. Ensure that the wick maintains its central position. Extinguish any candle that smokes excessively (check instructions before relighting). Do not burn a candle on a flammable or fragile surface. Do not let a candle burn for more than three consecutive hours.

Cap d'Antibes for Albert Fouquet was heaven. In this charming village on the French Riviera, Albert enjoyed long holidays during the 1930s in the company of the elite of European aristocracy –holidays that extended from spring until the last days of summer. At that time, only a few were privileged enough to enjoy the elegant and ‘discreet luxury’ of spending the summer months on the French Riviera.

Unforgettable mornings were spent sailing in the Grande Bleu, golden sunsets were enjoyed from the gardens of the Eden Roc hotel, and balmy evenings were enlivened with exclusive celebrations and charming parties. Albert dreamt about these summers during the cold Parisian winters. Like any artist who strives for perfection, he spent many weeks delicately crafting a fragrance that captured the essence of his memories of those summer days

The result was Cap d'Antibes. A fragrance that was made for the exclusive enjoyment of its creator and became a favourite in his private collection.

Carta d’Armenia by Officina Profumo Farmaceutica di Santa Maria Novella is a paper soaked in a mixture of infusions of resins and oriental spices. It burns without flame and the vapour purifies the air and scent the interiors. Or it may be used also to perfume clothing by placing it intact in drawers or closets.

Santa Maria Novella began as a herbal apothecary range of medicinal balms and tinctures more than 800 years ago and has a rich, spiritual history. The products were originally created by an order of Italian Dominican monks, who used the herbs and flowers found in the gardens of their monastery just outside Florence to treat the skin ailments of patients in their infirmary. Today the range is loved by supermodels and celebrities alike and many of the formulations remain unchanged since the day they were created.
