Acqua de la Regina is the oldest fragrance in the collection. It is the perfume that Caterina de’ Medici commissioned the Dominican monks to create in 1533, and she took it with her to France when she married Enrico di Valois. For this reason this fragrance is identified as a perfume rather than with a cologne. It is a bouquet of fresh citrus notes with a base of Calabrian bergamot. The mould for the bottle is reminiscent of the glass bottles Officina has used over the last two centuries of its history, and it is used for all the other Santa Maria Novella colognes which have been created subsequently.

It is dedicated to the Mud Angels, youth from all over the world who flocked to Florence after the devastating flood of November 4, 1966 to save the heart and history of the city.

In the 18th century, thanks to the efficacy of the many formulas used, the fame of the pharmacy spread world wide. The herbs are organically grown and harvested when their balsamic properties are at their peak, at the end of June, early July. Production is now carried out in state of the art premises about 3 kms to the north of Florence. The hair perfume formula is reduced in alcohol for an ultra-thin diffusion, and enriched with natural, nourishing active ingredients for shiny and supple hair. It contains 95-98% natural ingredients, free of sulphates, silicones and parabens, and just like Matiere Premiere’s perfumes, it is vegan, phthalate-free and has no colorants. With alcohol derived from a 100% natural origin (beetroot).
Aurélien Guichard comes from a line of seven generations of perfumers. He perpetuated this family know how by becoming a perfumer at an early age and recently took over a business of rose grower in Grasse.

When I launched my brand in 2007, my goal was to put perfumery back on its pedestal and return it to its former glory, the way perfumery existed in the late 19th century and early 20th century.

Heir to a long line of cognac makers who were pioneers in luxury, Kilian decided to take up the torch of family tradition. Creating a new luxury brand was definitely a challenge worthy of his predecessors.
His childhood haunts included the family cellars in Cognac. Before graduating from CELSA, he wrote a thesis on the semantics of scent, in search of a ‘language’ common to gods and mortals. Remembering the “angels’ share” as part of his heritage, he was led into the world of perfumery. The “angels’ share” is what the House of Hennessy calls the percentage that – inexplicably – evaporates from cognac cellars, like an offering to the gods. Many of Kilian’s fragrances today carry this childhood memory as they are reminiscent of the sugar in the alcohol and the wood of the cognac barrels.
In 2007, Kilian launched his own namesake brand with the ambition of reflecting not only his distinct personality, but also to achieve a perfect alliance between elegance and uncompromising luxury. His “eco-luxe” philosophy that each bottle can be refilled and kept for a lifetime catapulted the brand to the top of the fragrance market and into a niche of its very own.
